Andrew started a fever Sunday night. He was around the high 99 - 101 range Monday morning and up to 102 by noon. If it didn't go down with some Tylenol our plan was to take him to the doctor Tuesday. However Monday afternoon while Clyde was getting dinner ready and I was leaving the office, Andrew had a febrile seizure. He was standing next to Clyde in the kitchen when he suddenly yelped, collapsed to the floor where his head hit with a loud crack, and he convulsed for two minutes or so.
Clyde called 911 and he was whisked away to the hospital. She was in no shape to drive. Keith was able to take the girls. From the beginning, he made SURE the girls understand that their baby brother would be fine (they started panicking and crying when they saw the whole action around a laying Andrew,) and as always they had a blast visiting with him. THANK YOU again, Grandpa! I arrived home a few minutes later and Clyde and I went to the hospital. Marti and Brittney happened to be close to the hospital and they arrived shortly after Andrew did. He had a 105 temperature when he first got into the ER. He was panicked, scared and screaming, however he was notably relieved to see his Grandma when she came in.
They ordered a series of tests (CT scan, chest x-ray, blood & urine analysis, and more) to try and find the cause of the fever as well as make sure he was okay after hitting his head. As a precaution he wore a neck brace until the CT scan results could be read and we were sure he didn't have a neck injury which turned out fine but took many agonizing hours to get the results. (Just imagine Clyde's anxiety level at this point. I was okay).
The chest x-ray showed he had bronchiolitis, a viral infection in the smaller airways of the lungs. The doctor prescribed some breathing treatments & a steroid to help keep the airways open, and a Tylenol/Motrin rotation to keep the fever down. The virus should run its course over the next few days, and in fact his temperature and behavior has been much improved since Monday. All other tests came back just fine.
It was a scary event, but we recognize that it could have been much worse. Thankfully quick action on Clyde's part, skilled help from the paramedics, doctors & nurses, and the Lord's hand all took care of little Andrew.
