When the senseless and violent attacks happened seven years ago, terrorists hoped to teach a lesson of hatred and bring American people (and the rest of the civilized world for that matter) to their knees. Their evil expectations: fear and chaos. Well it didn’t work and won’t work in the future. I come from a country with a weak, corrupted structure and have spent time in several similar countries. The leadership in these countries typically lacks sound judgment and fails to act in favor of justice and equality. To make matters worse the citizens aren’t bold enough to demand their basic rights and needs. In this environment people are regularly denied the opportunity to improve their surroundings. Additionally there is no sense of safety or freedom that everyone deserves. There aren’t resources to address poverty, health needs and education. There is no money to defend the borders and protect personal belongings, or even their own lives. It’s a dangerous situation. And a sad reality indeed.
Someday they will find their way out of this vicious cycle, as we did it with our nation’s own sorrows and loss on Sept. 11, 2001. When something went terribly wrong, America defiantly decided no matter what to Stay Calm and Carry On!** We did it then, we’re doing it now. This blessed country has all these resources, and the spirit, and much more. And as always, we use them well.
Life is possible because the peace we're greatly granted! We should treasure it dearly.
Today I’d like to express our gratitude to all those American citizens who worked and continue to work to keep us free from harm. My family, like yours, goes to bed everyday thankful for all the people that keep their eyes open while we comfortably sleep. We send our kids to schools and playgrounds without second thoughts. Anyone can come and go anywhere, anytime, without restrictions or conditions. We express our opinions and demand results. We have the chance to choose our government officials and worship as we please. We have limitless lifestyle opportunities. And the best part is that no one is there to shame us, blame us or restrict the lives we live. All this thanks to our servicemen overseas and at home.
We enjoy endlessly freedom because past and present heroes watch over us around the clock. We publicly salute them and we must gladly support their efforts because their patriotic hearts moved them to protect our families and soil as selfless soldiers. They just silently ask one little favor in return: our prayers. So we should fervently fulfill that request as they do their self-appointed duty in keeping us safe and sound!
Happy people live in safe and free countries. And we’re fortunate to live in one of them!
**This was one of many posters printed during World War II. It was placed all over in order to keep up hope among the troops as well as with their families at home. This motto reflects perfectly the proper character and determination shown by the people of that conflicted time. Not a bad thing to remember... under any circumstances, right?!
